Gavaskar Compares Shubman Gill to India’s Iconic England-Winning Captains

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, writing in his column for Mid-day, has backed Gill amid the pressure and compared him to legendary Indian captains Rahul Dravid and Kapil Dev the only Indian captains to have won a Test series in England.

“It might be pertinent to note that India has won a Test series in England only thrice: in 1971 under Ajit Wadekar, in 1986 under Kapil Dev, and in 2007 under Rahul Dravid. All three were the coolest skippers one could ever hope for. The laconic style of Wadekar, the rip-roaring yet controlled style of Kapil, and the intense and thoughtful method of Dravid,” Gavaskar wrote.

Gavaskar Sees Shubman Gill as a Rare Blend of Calm, Confidence, and Intensity

Gavaskar further noted that Shubman Gill combines qualities from all three legends. On the field, Gill remains calm and focused; while batting, he is fierce and confident. Gavaskar highlighted this mix as a rare combination.

“Not once did these three ever get excited, whatever the situation, and that calm certainty was infectious. Shubman Gill in Birmingham looked like an amalgam of these three intense and iconic while scoring a double century and a century, rip-roaring yet thoughtful, as his bowlers dismantled the England batting in both innings,” he added.

Since taking over as captain of the Indian Test team, Shubman Gill has faced constant scrutiny. Yet, despite the pressure, he guided India to a win in the Edgbaston Test. With 607 runs in the series so far, including a double century and two centuries, he has proven the doubters wrong about his ability to perform in English conditions.

The fourth Test between India and England is set to begin at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester on July 23.
