Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy is primed to be selected in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad that will be announced later today. He made a comeback to the Indian T20I team in 2024 after his successful stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Varun was a part of India’s victorious T20I side that year and went onto become India’s most dependable spinner in the format in quick time. His return to the Indian T20I team, the second time around, was paved with a lot of success.

Varun was first selected in the Indian team in 2021 before the T20 World Cup 2021. He was included in India’s squad for the tournament but lost his place soon after the World Cup. In his second stint, he has been a much-improved bowler.

Gautam Gambhir Brings In Warrior's Mindset - Varun Chakravarthy

Before India’s selection for the Asia Cup, Varun Chakravarthy spoke about Gautam Gambhir’s role in his international comeback for India.

“Gauti Bhai also has helped me a lot in my comeback, the way he motivates me. Even if we talk little, he has always given me good confidence and he has always told that no matter who's going to ignore you, I will keep you in my plans for now. So, that kind of gave me confidence. And if you ask about Gauti Bhai as a mentor, then I would say he brings in a warrior mindset in the dressing room, which is very important and has worked for us at KKR and in the Champions Trophy," Chakravarthy told RevSportz.

Chakravarthy was first picked in the T20I series against Bangladesh on his return and since then, is India’s highest wicket-taker in the format. The wrist spinner has scalped 31 wickets from 12 innings at an average of 11.25 and an economy of 7.58. 14 of his 31 wickets came in 2025 in just five games.

After his T20I success, he also played for India in the Champions Trophy earlier this year and was the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with nine scalps from three matches. He played a key role in India’s title triumph under Rohit Sharma. He will be India’s first-choice spinner and might be picked ahead of Kuldeep Yadav in the lineup. India’s Asia Cup campaign begins on September 10 against UAE in Dubai, followed by the high-voltage clash against Pakistan on September 14.
